As a revert to Islam, I am always looking for ways to improve my understanding and draw myself closer to Allah. The best way to do this is to talk frequently of Allah and His Book the Quran, study it and spread its message to others. We ask Allah to give us “Hidaya” right guidance.
The act of seeking knowledge is in itself an act of worship as the Prophet Mohammed (SAW) is to have said,”………Contemplating, (seeking Knowledge) for one hour is better than 70 years of worship.” (Tafsir Rooh- Al Bayan). From this we understand that the effort made to contemplate or seek knowledge about Allah, and His revelation the Quran, is a form of superior worship. We are not saying abandon prayer and those things that are obligatory as Muslims, but the Prophet (SAW) here is emphasizing that without knowledge our worship can be empty or insufficient. If we do not understand our Deen than we cannot properly worship Allah.
The Messenger of Allah gave glad tidings to anyone who undertakes the task of seeking knowledge. Abu Hurayrah relates that the Prophet said, “For him who embarks on the path of seeking knowledge, Allah will ease for him the way to paradise.” (Related by Muslim) So, He also informs us that the path to Jannah is through seeking knowledge. We should set aside time every week to attend a lecture, read a book, watch a video, or listen to a tape about our Deen. There is an abundance of information out there so how do we prioritize, choose? Start with the Quran. Take a verse from the Quran, and read the tafsir. There are some verses in the Quran that have pages of text as explanation. You can also read a Hadith; start with one of the 40 Nawawi Hadith, and read the commentary on and explanation. If you do this every day, or at least once a week, Allah will Inshallah reward you with increasing your Knowledge and Iman and it is a way to gain Taqwa (Islamic Peity).
